Society crumbles after an EMP attack, and the terrifying nightmare has only just begun…

Three people from different walks of life each experience the end of America. Cassy is a 33-year-old prepper and single mother, away on business. Ethan is a hacker and conspiracy nut living underground. Frank is a family man out camping with friends and family. When a devastating EMP attack in the middle of the night destroys America’s infrastructure, they are propelled on an unforgettable journey across an ocean of chaos to reach safety… Safety from an unknown invader and from once-fellow Americans now hungry and desperate. Dark New World is a prepper story of survival and the fight to retain humanity in the face of an apocalyptic event.

Each book gets better written (though some of the plots seem forced). What I like best is that the books are written much like a movie would where you simultaneously see what is happening with each sub-plot at the same time period. There's even a couple of scenes thrown in that have nothing to do with the on-going plots, but serve to shore up what is happening in another place. Decent characterizations, and plausible scenarios. Only real qualms I have are I wish they would go into a little more depth about the techniques used to overcome the EMP and farming techniques, and also that I find it not believable that society would fall so quickly in less than a week (this coming from someone who has been without power for weeks). Still, a fun series.

I just couldn't do it. I tried. I really tried to like this book, but it is such a groaner. The characters are predictable and kinda one dimensional. The plot twists seem forced.

Without giving too much away, everything goes Lord of the Flies within a week of a massive EMP knocking out the grid.

I started to give up when the Rancher Scout fixates on our heroine for killing another scout then blames her for an enemy force blowing up his farm. They didn't even go back to see if anyone survived. He just conveniently leaves on a vendetta right before the explosions then vows to "Make that bitch pay". Ugh...

When grandma goes all religious zealot when "God leads her to this random house" that she watches enemy soldiers shoot up, then blow up I gave up. She decides to wait at the burning house for a sign from God, which I can only assume this is where our grandma meets our plucky group of survivors, who just happen to be headed to the farm where grandma is bringing her grand kids, to reunite with her daughter who gave the survivors an invitation to come live off her stockpile of supplies etc....you get the idea. There is no real struggle, just predictable and unimaginative plot devices. I'm sorry, but I tried to like it. I made it about 3/4 of the way through.
Well told story of post EMP survival. Great characters, although you'll have some of them. That's just because they are so realistic. I can't wait to start the next book in the series.
I loved this book, the authors do a great job dispicting the characters in this book. I read a lot of end of the world books and this one is one of the better ones and does not get hung up on descriptions of weapons or cases of food. It is very well written and I plan on getting book 2
The book was better than I thought it would be, I'm glad I found it-and glad there's only a month till part two comes out!! I like when authors put survival tips in their books, it helps us learn. Thanks for writing, please keep it up.
It was a very realistic read and fairly good character development. As I have read almost 200 of this genre books, this was amongst the better of those. The errors were minimal which always leads to a good read. I didnt have to go back and read any paragraphs over again to get the meaning of what I was reading; therefore a much smother story line. But i dint follow the map as most of this book took place in my back yard and I knew all of the places that were mention in the story. So accuracy was maintained throughout another plus. I cant wait to read the next installment.
It drives me nuts that no one discovers bicycles in these stories. Cassy could have made the trip in one day on a bike. I’d love to read a story where the protagonist does everything right.
When I bought this ebook, I hoped for a quick, fast-paced read with characters developed enough to think and maybe even care about after I'd finished, and without a lot of how-to or philosophical blather. Most of all, I wanted good story to spend a few hours with. Yeah, I know, that's asking a lot of one of these low-end ebooks.

This book, somewhat unexpectedly, delivered exactly what I wanted - and more. For such a short book (170-something pages) this well delivered tale hooked me thoroughly for the next one in the series. I like a good series, and judging by this first entry, Holden's "Dark New World" is going to have me hooked for a good long while.

A note about the POV shifts and focus changes some reviewers found jarring. Many writers, from Vonnegut on, use short sections and frequent shifts in focus as a way to describe a central event or a period of chaotic action "from the outside in," without having to resort to exposition. In a way, it's a form of "show, don't tell" and Holden uses it well here. What could be more chaotic than the hours and days immediately following the total infrastructure collapse that an EMP attack would cause? Holden uses short sections and focus shifting to get this across, and it works. As a reader, Holden's narrative skill immersed me believably in a chaos the U.S. has been lucky enough to avoid so far.

As chaos set in following the kickoff EMP attack, I found people's responses to it completely plausible. From getting drunk, to staying low while sneaking out of Dodge, to stealing whatever is available before it's gone, Holden describes the response without judgment. It's just how people are, and I found myself nodding my head at these characters, even the "worst" ones, more than once. This writer's comfort with human nature shows through brilliantly as the wide range of his characters meet and mesh and clash through the first few chapters.

But more than the skillful focus changes, I found the POV (point of view) changes impressive and skillfully executed. Offhand, I can think of one established series - the wonderful SciFi "Liaden" series by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller - that makes a basic narrative technique out of POV shifts inside the storytelling to telegraph which character now has the focus. Holden does this as well as Lee and Miller, and to as good effect. That's pretty strong praise, considering what masters Lee and Miller are of the technique. I found myself shifting between and "being" casual prepper Cassie (only arguably the main protagonist), family man Frank, street survivor Jaz, and other characters effortlessly, just from the narrative alone.

Holden does this by making the viewpoint so identifiable as feelings or perceptions that one character might have but not another, that I sometimes shifted viewpoint without realizing it until later. It's more than changing the use of contractions and dialects and a character's own internal angers or uncertainties. It's a change in how the whole immediate world is understood. I never felt a wrenching change when the POV switched between (mostly) the main characters, because the narrative always prepared me for the switch. That's impressive, communicating all that solely from the narrative, and it's what pulled a fifth star from me.

Others have already mentioned the pleasure of reading a little-known author's ebook without cringing at the lack of a competent editor. Holden knows the difference between a subject and an object (my personal favorite gripe about careless writers) and you won't find here the unfortunately common ignorance about when to use its or it's, or making other common punctuation mistakes. That's pleasant, after suffering through such awful use of language in most low-end books.

But my five-star rating is for the skillful use of narrative shifts and character points of view. These drew me in immediately and now I'm thoroughly hooked, in a genre I don't normally even read. Do yourself a favor - give this one a try.
