In this thrilling conclusion to the bestselling Meritropolis trilogy, Charley and company chase the Czar to Meritopia, a utopian city set among celestial heights in the mountains. Just to get near the city, Charley will have to brave terrifying new animal combos roaming wild among the stark wilderness, and if he succeeds in summiting the peak, there’s no assurances that he will even be able to gain access. Meritopia might deign to be a perfect society based on merit, but that doesn’t mean everyone’s invited. But Charley’s not the kind of person who waits for an invitation to do what needs to be done and this is his last chance to zero the System and avenge his brother’s death.

Interview with the Author

Q - What or who was your inspiration to write in this genre?

I’ve read a lot in the YA dystopian genre so I would say it's a mix of a lot of different things. I really just wanted to explore this question of, “What gives a person their worth?” Is it their usefulness to society? Is it because someone loves them? Is it because of how they look? Is it because of their health or ability? As a Christian, I believe that everyone has worth because they are made in the image of God so I wanted to explore some different takes on this question. I think that the post-apocalyptic/dystopian/scifi-ish genre was the best vehicle to tackle some of those deep philosophical questions in a fun and interesting way.

Q - Okay, so you're a Christian... Well, I don't like reading Christian fiction so interview's over, I guess—

Not so fast. I am a Christian, but this is most definitely NOT Christian fiction, at least in the technical sense. There are certainly some Christian themes like courage in the face of evil, grace to love and forgive even when someone doesn't deserve it, and the biggest themes of identity and worth, the value of a person, as mentioned above, and it's a very CLEAN book, which a lot of parents have told me they really appreciate. That being said, this is very much a secular young adult dystopian fiction series, and one that I think hits a lot of the tropes and conventions in the genre, but in some new and interesting ways that might just surprise you. For those who care to look there are also some deeper philosophical underpinnings floating just below the surface of a book that is almost pure action. Just wait until you meet Charley, he's more of an "act first, think later" type of person, if you know what I mean—in other words, your typical teenage boy...

Q - Are there any books that have inspired you at any time while you’ve been writing?

I read a LOT in many different genres so there are many different things that have shaped my writing over the years, but I wouldn’t say there was any one particular book, or books, that I was consciously looking to for inspiration while writing Meritropolis. Looking back though I can definitely see different threads of influence in almost everything I have read over the years that contribute to make Meritropolis what it is the strong protagonist of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series, the philosophical bent of C.S. Lewis’ fiction where there are layers upon layers of meaning, the bleak dystopian setting of Hugh Howey’s WOOL series, and many more.

Q - Where can we learn more about you and your other books?

Meritopia Meritropolis Book 3 edition by Joel Ohman Children eBooks

Meritopia is the third and final book in the series. As our adventures travel to the Utopian city on the mountaintop to confront the Czar . It is there that they hope to zero the unfair merit system. They face many obstacles and a new group of animal combos along the way. Once there, will they have a high enough score to be allowed to enter the city of Meritiopia, home of the perfect society based on merit. Along the way they encounter the doctor that is designing all the animal combos. Who helps them better understand what is going on, and how far the animal experiments have gone. They also find out that many people are upping their score by adding animal DNA to become part animal, part people.

While the troop of adventures are traveling, there is a constant undeclared battle for leadership. With Sandy asserting herself over Charley and taking the lead. Like all battles for leadership, eventually conditions and challenges allow true leadership to rise to the top. The journey proves to be a great growth experience for all the travelers. As they get split into groups that must fend for themselves and learn self reliance.

Charley get so challenge and fight the Czar to avenge the killing of Alex his brother back in Meritropolis. When he is overpowered. Orson steps up to confront his father and Czars arrogance proves to be the Czars undoing.

This series of books is well written and suitable reading for younger readers. As they are cleanly written and lesson based. By the end of the book , the story line gathers all the lose threads and weaves it into a very satisfying conclusion. I highly recommend this book and the whole series.

Meritopia Meritropolis Book 3 edition by Joel Ohman Children eBooks Reviews

This was a great book in a great series. I loved the descriptions of what was going on in the book. It jump started my imagination on what the books were saying. Had me on the edge of my seat. Joel's writing technique a allowed my thoughts of what was going on to merge with his descriptions. His use of biblical themes was very well done. You aren't judgement you will learn something by reading this series of books! Keep them coming Joel!
This is the last book in the Meritropolis series and it seems to tie up many threads that the author wrote in the other books. There may be a vague hint of more books to come in the future. I loved all three of these books and I encourage everyone to read them as well.
I loved all the books in the series but this one really is my favorite! I love how the author brings God and the teachings in the Bible into the story! Bringing out love and grace gets us through! Joel Ohman is a wonderful author and writes beautiful stories that keep you on the edge of your seat with the action and adventures in each story. He is an author I look forward to following and reading all his books.
I found it difficult to get into the story at the beginning of the first book. But dragged along to the final book by a ragtag of people with their own issues, each fundementally questioning their "reason d'etre" in a society where they are either valued, viewed as a threat, or if no value at all.
This dystopian society finds an almost utopian solution when after a final battle between the system's leaders and those opposed to it results in a recognition that everybody matter, not for what they can contribute, but merely because they exist.
A truely inspirational story where lust, revenge and self centredness is conquered by love - but that is not the end....
I began with Meritropolis, in this dystopian society where every time you turn the page there is another unexpected escalation or challenge. Redemption is an ever-changing goal for each of the main characters, with a surprising undercurrent of Christian faith coming from one of the least-expected characters.

This trilogy is hard to put down, and the end is surprising, but quite satisfying. I would love to read one more book ,seeing how the future affects the fledgling New order of things.

This entire series gets a five-star rating from me,for sure!
This book is a good, solid ending to a good series. Not your same old YA dystopian adventure, as the characters actually grow and develop, learning from each other and their situations. I love how the author weaved in the themes of grace and forgiveness without hitting the reader over the head with them. I also love how these themes always came up in the context of conversations among the characters. I do wish the editing had been better- there were many grammatical errors and too many instances of things "bubbling up;" sweat, rage, fear...that phrase was just too overused. Orson's character also perturbed me as he was so unpredictable and didn't have a relatable personality either for good or for bad. He did so many things that just made no sense, that I found myself dreading parts where he featured prominently. The good definitely outweighed the bad, however, and I am looking forward to receiving and reading the next Joel Ohman novel that I preordered!
This book is an excellent ending to a very good trilogy. In this book, Charlie and his crew are heading west toward Meritopia. Charlie is determined to get revenge on the Czar for the death of his brother Alec. The group is determined to zero the system and end the ranking system, giving all equal rights. But after their revolt in Meritropolis and Meritorium, they are afraid they have been making things worse instead of better. In their travels, they encounter many animal combinations, always with interesting results. The group members experience positive changes in themselves. This book contains many powerful lessons, mostly taught by Grigor. I enjoyed this story and it's characters very much. I'm sorry this trilogy is over and I will look for more from this author in the future.
